Who we are

About Brighter Futures:

Brighter Futures is a charity that supports parents, carers, children and young people in Jersey. We provide a number of free programmes and services to help support the parents and carers we meet. Parents and carers come to us for a variety of reasons and from across the social system. All have different backgrounds, experiences, family and financial situations and many suffer from poverty, isolation, physical illness and low self-esteem.

We work alongside the main carer to support child development, parent/carer-child relationships and family health and wellbeing to improve family and home environments and increase life chances and opportunities.

We offer a range of personal development, educational and second chance learning programmes, group sessions, one-to-one emotional support, information, advice and practical help in order to help parents and carers with self-esteem, confidence and communication skills.

Brighter Futures is based at The Bridge – a multi-service provision for families and young people. Clients are referred to us from various sources including schools, GPs, health visitors, social workers and CAMHS or people can self-refer. We work with other agencies and in partnership with Parenting Support Services to encourage people to make a difference to their future through the choices they make for themselves and their families

We support approximately 150 families at any one time and on average it costs approximately £3,500 for us to work with a whole family as opposed to the £70,000 it is estimated to cost the States of Jersey to look after one child within the island’s care system.

Vision, mission, aims and values:

To create brighter futures for families in Jersey.

Mission: To narrow the gap between social class and attainment, breaking the inter-generational cycle of disadvantage by:

  • Supporting clients to recognise and value their role as their child’s first and most important educator.

  • Encouraging clients to be able to recognise the barriers to achieving the wellbeing and good relationships, so taking action to improve their personal lives.

  • Empowering clients to take control of their personal and educational development and improve their life chances.

  • To provide children, young people and families in the island with the opportunity to be safe, healthy, happy and aspirational.

  • To support children, young people and families to engage in life changing opportunities, especially in time of difficulties and challenges.

We believe that everyone has talents and abilities and the capacity to make a valuable contribution to the community and that those who face challenges in realising their abilities should be given the necessary support;

  • Collaboration and equality: we are committed to ensuring that people who use our services are involved in setting priorities and making decisions about the way we work and the things we do.

  • Quality: we believe in recording our impact, monitoring our provision, developing our performance and improving our practice. We review what we do and encourage a focus on continuous improvement in our services. We are committed to professional integrity, objectivity, fairness and ethical business practices.

  • Co-operation and partnership: our services are part of a wider education economy in Jersey and we are committed to working with other organizations to improve, develop and expand services for families facing difficulty in the island.
