What do Parent Champions do?
Parent Champions are volunteers who give information to parents about what States and community facilities are available to help them get the support they need to improve their family life and their children’s outcomes.
Confidence and community with Parent Champions
Benefits of being a Parent Champion include building confidence and developing skills to help in daily life and in seeking employment. Being a parent Champion also offers an opportunity to give back to your community.
What does it involve?
Full Parent Champion training is provided by Brighter Futures to give you the skills and confidence to talk to families within the community. As a Parent Champion, you’ll be talking to parents about what’s on offer: this will take one to three hours a week at will be at your convenience. We also offer one-to-ones and group follow-ups with our Parent Champions and have a private Facebook page.
Benefits of being a Parent Champion
The Parent Champion Jersey is based around the successful Parent Champion programme being run in the UK by the Family & Childcare Trust (UK), so we can draw on their knowledge and experience. They say:
Our parent volunteers tell us that becoming a Parent Champion has real benefits. They enjoy helping their communities and gain confidence from seeing the impact they can have. This often leads to them finding paid jobs, often after a few years out of the workplace.’
There are also so many comments like this one from a new Parent Champion: ‘The training was a great experience for me. It opened my eyes to a lot of things that can make a difference to helping parents.
Why do people become Parent Champions?
These new Parent Champions were asked about why they decided they wanted to volunteer and what they look forward to doing.
My community will definitely benefit!
Offering support and helping new people.
Meeting and helping parents to the best of my ability.
I believe there are a lot of people struggling who are not aware of certain services. Some just need direction or support to take the first step.
People who have been Parent Champions for longer, love what they do and find it very rewarding.
