We are delighted to announce that Marcia Filipa has pledged to run the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon to help raise funds (CLICK TO DONATE) for Brighter Futures. The marathon is on Sunday, the 1st October and starts at 9am from St Helier, a challenge for both new and seasoned runners.
Anyone who has not spoken to Marcia for a while might be surprised to learn that she is running a marathon, previously being a self-confessed NON runner. In her words, “I would only ever run if it was raining and I needed to get to my car!” But Marcia had been thinking about starting for a little while and one day she just decided to put her trainers on and try. She says, “You have to be mentally ready, everyone can tell you what changes you should make to your life but you don’t make changes for other people. One day I woke up and I was ready.”
As a friend of Brighter Futures, Marcia believes that the work we do with the community inspired really positive lifestyle changes for her; including giving up smoking and starting running. What better way to make changes in her life than to support those who inspire it, “I want to run for Brighter Futures because everyone should know how hard the team works.” Her personal challenge for the marathon, in her words “I just want to raise as much for Brighter Futures as possible and I want to finish the whole marathon – ideally not last!”
Marcia has been through quite a challenge already with her training, having suffered from a torn ligament in her ankle halfway through her training. This has resulted in a significant 3 month break from her running while the ankle healed. Added to being a busy mum of three, Marcia has determination aplenty – she certainly enjoys a challenge!
We will be with you every step of the way, Marcia! Good luck from us all at Brighter Futures – you are a real inspiration.
Why get involved? Every single penny will help to create brighter futures for families and young people in Jersey.
